The Complete Guide to WhatsApp Click-to-Chat Links (wa.me)

Everything the wa.me link format can do — phone formatting, pre-filled messages, tracking, and where it breaks down.

5 min read

Every WhatsApp widget, every "Chat with us" button, every QR code that opens a conversation — underneath, it's almost always the same simple link format. Here's exactly how it works and how to use it well.

The basic format

A click-to-chat link looks like this: https://wa.me/[phone number]. The phone number needs the full country code, no plus sign, no spaces, no dashes — just digits. For a Dutch number, that's 31 followed by the number without the leading zero. For a Brazilian number, it's 55 followed by the area code and number.

Get the format wrong and the link either fails to open or opens a chat with the wrong contact — always test a link before publishing it anywhere.

Adding a pre-filled message

Append ?text= followed by your URL-encoded message: https://wa.me/31612345678?text=Hi%2C%20I%20have%20a%20question. The %20 and %2C are URL-encoded spaces and commas — most link generators (including ours) handle this encoding automatically so you can just type normal text.

A good pre-filled message does two things: it tells the recipient what the visitor was looking at, and it lowers the effort of starting the conversation. "Hi" alone wastes the one chance you have to add context.

What this link mechanism can't do

It's a deep link, not an API. That means:

  • No way to track clicks natively — you need to add your own analytics or use a tool that logs the click before opening WhatsApp
  • No way to trigger it automatically based on visitor behavior — that requires JavaScript on your site (which is what a widget adds)
  • No way to send a message the recipient didn't initiate — the visitor always has to hit send themselves
  • Works on desktop via WhatsApp Web, but requires the visitor to have WhatsApp installed either way

Where these links show up

  • A button or widget on your website
  • Your Instagram, TikTok, or LinkedIn bio
  • A QR code on packaging, receipts, or signage
  • An email signature or SMS
  • A Google Ads or Facebook Ads call-to-action

The link itself doesn't change based on where it's placed — what changes is the pre-filled message, which should match the context it's found in.

Building one without a widget

If you just need a one-off link — for a bio, a flyer, or a QR code — our free WhatsApp Link Generator builds the correctly formatted link and a scannable QR code in a few seconds, no account needed. If you want the same mechanism working automatically on your website with triggers and analytics, that's what a widget adds on top.
